How Thrifle uses AI
Most of the pages in our return-policy and discount databases were drafted by software, not typed by a person. We think you should know that, and know what it does and doesn’t mean about how much to trust them.
What the system is
“Thrifle AI” is our in-house research and drafting pipeline. It reads a retailer’s own published policy pages and turns them into the structured fields you see on our merchant pages — return window, restocking fee, free-returns status, holiday extensions, exclusions — plus the short summary above them.
It is a tool we run, not a member of staff and not an author. It has no byline credentials, no expertise of its own, and no judgement about your purchase. Where a page says “Compiled by Thrifle AI,” that is a statement about provenance: a machine drafted it from a source document we link on the same page.
What it does
- Extracts policy terms from a retailer’s public customer-service pages.
- Normalises them into the same fields for every merchant, so pages compare cleanly.
- Drafts the plain-English summary and FAQ answers on merchant pages.
- Produces the Schema.org structured data behind those pages.
What it doesn’t do
- It does not call retailers, test returns at a counter, or confirm anything beyond what the retailer publishes. If a store’s written policy differs from what happens in practice, we will have the written version.
- It does not decide which products or retailers we feature, and it has no input into affiliate relationships.
- It is not a substitute for the retailer’s own policy page. Every merchant page links the primary source, and that link is the authority — not us.
Where humans come in
Editorial standards, the field structure, the grading methodology, and the source list are set and maintained by Haider E., Thrifle’s founder. Individual pages are reviewed when a reader reports a problem, when a retailer changes a policy we track, or when a page is picked up in a periodic sweep of the database.
We want to be precise about this rather than flattering: we do not individually fact-check every page in the database before it publishes.The database is large and most entries have been read by software and not by a person. That is why every page shows the date it was last checked and links the retailer’s own policy — so you can see how fresh our copy is and confirm it at the source.
Dates on our pages
“Last checked” is a real timestamp from our database, recording when that record was last compiled or updated. When we don’t have one, we show no date at all rather than an estimate.
